Theremino Opto-Relay (MOSFET): Isolated Switching for High-Current Loads

The Theremino Opto-Relay is a solid-state photo relay designed to provide complete electrical isolation between the low-voltage control circuit (e.g., the Theremino Master or Arduino) and the high-power load circuit.

This module uses a high-efficiency MOSFET output, making it ideal for silently driving large loads, motors, valves, or lighting systems, with the added benefit of being able to handle both AC and DC signals on the load side.

Key Features and Flexibility

  • MOSFET Photo Relay: Provides fast, reliable, and silent switching without the mechanical wear of traditional relays.

  • Total Electrical Isolation: The opto-isolated design ensures the high-power load circuit is completely separated from the sensitive control electronics, protecting your Master or Arduino.

  • AC or DC Load Compatibility: The solid-state output can switch both AC and DC loads (as shown in the “A” Connection diagram).

  • PWM Dimming Capability: When used with a Theremino Master (or any PWM-capable device), the opto-relay can operate in PWM mode to smoothly dim large lighting loads or control the speed of DC motors.

  • Wide System Compatibility: Designed for optimal use with the Theremino System (running natively on Windows 10) but is also fully compatible with Arduino systems without any modification.

Connection and Wiring

The control input follows the Theremino standard, simplifying integration:

  • Input Connector: Uses a standard 3-pole connector where the center pin is typically .

  • Simplified Wiring: Since the is not required for the opto-relay’s operation, you only need to use two single Dupont cables to connect the SIGNAL and GND pins to your controller.

  • GND Optimization: For installations requiring high current or when distributing ground to many modules, you can create a short on the bottom side of the PCB, soldering the central pin to the GND pad. This allows you to use the center pin to carry the ground, simplifying cable management.

Typical Connection Modes for the Load Circuit:

(Refer to the image for detailed wiring diagrams)

Mode Use Case Description
“A” Connection General Purpose / AC or DC Switches power to the load, regardless of AC or DC type.
“B” Connection DC Load (Low-Side) Switches the negative side (GND) of a DC load.
“C” Connection DC Load (High-Side) Switches the positive side () of a DC load.

System Requirements

This module is designed to interface directly with the digital outputs of your preferred micro-controller:

  1. Theremino Master or IoT Module: Recommended for use with the Theremino System and its I/O capabilities.

  2. Theremino HAL Application: Required for configuring the output pin (e.g., as a digital output or PWM output) on the Master/IoT module.

  3. Power Supply: An external power source is needed for the high-current load circuit.
