Theremino CapSensor (Slave Module): High-Sensitivity Capacitive Sensor

The Theremino CapSensor is a specialized slave module designed for extremely high-sensitivity detection and measurement of capacitance changes. Its primary application is the long-distance detection of a hand or conductive object, making it essential for Theremin-like musical instruments, proximity sensing, and certain biometry applications.

It connects to the Theremino Master via the serial communication line (CN5 – OneWire), acting as an expansion unit to increase the number of system I/O pins.

Key Features and Advanced Technology

  • Long-Distance Detection: The module is capable of detecting the position of a hand (or other conductive objects) over many meters, a performance level often considered unattainable by other detection systems.

  • High Sensitivity and Stability: Uses a sophisticated circuit design to achieve high stability against temperature variations and minimal background noise, crucial for long-range operation.

  • Dynamic Latency Algorithm: Features a revolutionary algorithm (V2.1 firmware) designed to overcome the classical trade-off between reaction time and stability:

    • Low Latency (High Speed): When the hand is near and moving quickly, latency is reduced (down to $\mathbf{0.8 \text{ ms}}$).

    • High Accuracy (High Stability): When the hand is far and moving slowly, it uses a longer signal integration time ($\mathbf{16}$ to $\mathbf{32 \text{ ms}}$) for increased accuracy.

  • System Integration: Functions as a Slave Module, expanding the I/O capacity of the Theremino Master through the dedicated serial line (OneWire).

Important Note for Self-Builders (DIY)

Due to the extreme sensitivity of the circuit and the critical nature of its components, DIY construction is highly discouraged:

  • Component Criticality: Stability and noise floor depend heavily on specific, precise components (e.g., particular inductor brands).

  • Complex Calibration: The construction, calibration, and testing process are highly sensitive and require specialized knowledge.

  • Performance Risk: Improper construction can drastically reduce the effective operating range from “many meters” down to “a few centimeters.” Purchasing pre-built and tested modules is generally recommended.

System Requirements

The CapSensor is a slave module and requires a master controller:

  • Theremino Master (V1 or later): Required to connect the CapSensor via the serial line and manage communication with the PC.

  • Theremino HAL Application: Essential for configuring the CapSensor pin type and viewing the data via the Slot system.
